Summary

India is the world's largest producer of millets. Millets have been a staple of the Indian diet for millennia. They have numerous health benefits and are also good for the environment due to their low water and input requirements for cultivation. Millets are grains that are comparable to rice and wheat but are higher in protein, minerals, and vitamins. Sorghum, Pearl millet, and Finger millet are the three most important millets in India and are also known as Jowar, Bajra, and Ragi. To encourage millet exports, the government has devised a strategy that incorporates the participation of Indian missions overseas as well as multinational retail stores like Carrefour and Walmart. As part of the concept, Indian missions abroad will be enlisted to assist in branding and publishing domestic products. The Indian government recommended to the United Nations that 2023 be designated as the International Year of Millets (IYoM). This will generate domestic and worldwide demand while also providing people with nutritious food. In March 2021, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recognised 2023 as the International Year of Millets, with 72 countries supporting India's request. Millets are grown in approximately 21 states throughout the country, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and many more.

According to the research report "India Millets Market Overview, 2028," published by Bonafide Research, the India Millets market was valued USD 5.05 Billion in 2022. Millets were designated as nutri-cereals by the Indian government in April 2018. Then, in order to facilitate the movement of millets, it amended guidelines for the migration of surplus millet production to other states. A mechanism for inter-state transportation of surplus millets through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been added to meet the advance demand indicated by the consuming state prior to the start of procurement. On December 20, 2021, NITI Aayog signed a Statement of Intent with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to assist India in assuming a worldwide lead in knowledge sharing by capitalising on the potential of 2023 as the International Year of Millets. It also intends to create sustainable livelihoods for small-holder farmers as well as adaptation capacities to climate change and transform food systems. Millets, including pearl millet (bajra), foxtail millet, finger millet (ragi), and others, are abundant in nutrients and gluten-free. They contain a lot of fibre, protein, vitamins, and minerals. As consumer health consciousness grew, there was a greater desire for healthier food options, resulting in a rise in millet consumption. Millets have grown in popularity due to the incidence of gluten-related illnesses and the popularity of gluten-free diets, as they are naturally gluten-free and ideal for people with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.

The product type of the market includes pearl millet, foxtail millet, sorghum, finger millet and others (kodo millet, proso millet, barnyard millet). Among them pearl millet is most commonly consumed millet in India and is dominating the market with significant market share. Pearl millet has a long history of cultivation in India and is a traditional staple crop in many locations, particularly dry and semi-arid regions. It has been a staple of Indian diets for millennia, and its intake is strongly established in particular groups' cultural practises. Pearl millet is a tough, drought-tolerant crop that can thrive in a variety of agro-climatic situations, including areas with low soil fertility and restricted water supplies. Because of its flexibility, it is suited for cultivation in many parts of India where other crops may struggle to thrive. Pearl millet can be used to make flatbreads (roti), porridge, couscous, and fermented goods, among other things. Its versatility in cooking applications makes it a preferred choice in a variety of situations. There is rising demand for organic millets in India in recent years and is expected to register significant CAGR of the market during the forecast period. Millets, including organic versions, are high in fibre, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Organic agricultural practises are thought to improve crop nutritional value by encouraging soil health and biodiversity, resulting in better nutrient levels in millets. The Indian government has promoted organic farming through various regulations and initiatives, recognising its potential for improving soil health, assisting farmers, and providing consumers with healthier food options. Such encouragement has led to an increase in organic millet production and consumption among farmers and consumers alike.

Based on application market is divided into easy to eat food, bakery, beverages, breakfast and direct consumption. There are significant trends in India of consuming millets in breakfast. Millets are high-nutritional-value grains that provide a variety of critical elements such as fibre, protein, vitamins (particularly B-complex vitamins), minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium), and antioxidants. Millets are an appealing alternative for a healthy and balanced breakfast because of their nutritional benefits. Millets have a low glycemic index (GI), which means they raise blood sugar levels more slowly and steadily than high-GI carbohydrates like wheat or rice. This trait can aid with blood sugar management and is advantageous for people with diabetes or those who want to maintain consistent energy levels throughout the morning. The millets are majorly distributed through traditional grocery stores in India. Furthermore, during the forecast period the online channel is expected to register highest CAGR of the market in India. Online platforms enable people to shop for millets from the comfort of their own homes. This convenience appeals to busy urban consumers who may not have the opportunity to visit physical establishments, particularly in major cities with heavy traffic and limited time. Product information on e-commerce platforms is thorough, including nutritional composition, provenance, certifications (such as organic or gluten-free), and user feedback. This transparency enables consumers to make informed decisions about millet goods. There are a number of online channels that distribute millets in India. Some of the most popular channels include Flipkart, Amazon, Bigbasket, Organic Tattwa and many more.
