Summary

A French law aimed at establishing the right-to-repair movement on a national scale recently went into force. E-waste is now the world's fastest increasing waste source, surpassing even plastic. As companies hurried to set up their newly minted remote workforce, the worldwide epidemic only helped to compound the issue. In a move that preempts EU authority, France approved a bill addressing e-waste on February 10, 2020. The presented measure has now become law, with a strong emphasis on reuse. Electronic garbage, often known as e-waste, includes electronic devices such as tablets, smartphones, and televisions, as well as white goods (big household appliances) such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Aside from excessive consumerism, which causes older items to be abandoned in favor of newer versions, the short lifespan of electronic consumer appliances (such as laptops or smartphones) has been blamed for the rise in e-waste generation.

According to the research report “France E-Waste Management Market Overview, 2028," published by Bonafide Research, the market is expected to add USD 0.51 Billion in the upcoming period, 2023–2028. Based on the source type the market are Household Appliances which include Air conditioners, dishwashers, and induction cookers, etc. Consumer Electronics includes Mobile Devices, Wearable, TVs, Set Top Boxes, Monitors, Laptops, Tablets, Computers, Printers, Scanners, etc. Industrial Electronics includes IT & Telecom Equipment, IT Accessories, PCBs, Digital Boards, Datacenters, Medical Equipment and Accessories, etc. Household sectors dominate the market since electronic gadgets are needed for almost all household tasks such as cleaning and cooking. Based on the material type such as Metal, Plastic, Glass, and others. Metal material is highly generated from e-waste in France since e-waste contains numerous valuable, recoverable materials such as aluminum, ferrous metals, copper, gold, and silver. Electronic equipment should be reconditioned, reused, and recycled wherever feasible to preserve natural resources and the energy required to manufacture new electronic equipment from virgin materials. Based on application type there are Trashed and recycled. Recycling e-waste serves a variety of applications. For example, keep such gadgets out of landfills to safeguard human and environmental health. Or retrieving valuable pieces from gadgets and giving manufacturers with recycled metals that may be utilised to construct new goods.

France is the first country to outlaw the disposal of unsold non-food items. Companies will now be required to repurpose, donate, or recycle their unsold items rather than dump or incinerate them. It is also the first country to make reparability mandatory. Most municipalities in France provide recycling bins for paper, plastic, and cardboard products. It is all mixed together in the bins with yellow lids, and the material separation is handled afterwards. Glass is placed in its own container. Electronic garbage can be disposed of at a waste collection centre or tip (déchèterie). To reduce environmental pollution and human health hazards, governments and industry authorities must implement effective methods to encourage e-waste re-use, refurbishment, or recycling at specialised facilities. The Basel Action Network (BAN) has established various standards and policies to guarantee that e-waste is handled in an environmentally responsible manner, hence lowering the prevalence of hazardous waste trade across the world. Furthermore, the European Union's Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EU WEEE) directive imposes collection, recovery, and recycling objectives on all member nations. To promote the proper management of electronic waste, all member nations have included these aims and recommendations into their regional policies.

Concerns of electronic waste management include the toxicity of hazardous materials and the collection, recycling, and recovery of usable resources. A products and materials flow analysis should be undertaken to understand the destiny of electronic trash after collection and recycling. As material resources become increasingly scarce, recycling may be able to supply secondary sources for new materials in the future. In this study, we look at electronic waste systems, especially resource recovery and recycling, as well as mapping electronic trash movements in France based on collecting data.

The Covid 19 impact on the E-waste management business is affecting the first two quarters of 2020, which indicate a decrease in consumption as compared to prior years. The third quarter of 2020 is greater than the second, and even higher than the third quarter of 2019. As a result, there is a rebound effect at work. However, the increase in quarter 3 is still smaller than the "business as usual" growth in the first two quarters, and consumption in the first three quarters as a whole has yet to approach pre-COVID-19 levels. After the Covid 19, the e-waste business began to flourish again.

Some of the E-Waste management companies in France are ACA Industry, Ruf Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, MTB Manufacturing, SITA (waste management company), General Industries SAS, Gaia, Esope Sarl, Valtri Environment, WEEEE Metallica, Promotrame and many more.
