Alternating current (AC) power is nearly ubiquitous, as conventional power grids supply AC power to commercial buildings and other users. However, certain categories of devices require direct current (DC) power. To provide DC power from an AC grid, these devices rely on internal or plug-in power supplies that convert power from AC to DC and step down voltage to the appropriate level. This conversion process results in an incremental loss of power due to inherent inefficiencies. When added together across numerous devices, the total power loss becomes more substantial.
DC offers better energy savings and improved reliability integrating DC-native resources and loads. Deployed at the building level, DC power distribution can reduce the number of required conversions, thereby increasing overall building energy efficiency. DC power systems rely on centralized, higher efficiency devices to convert AC to DC power and then distribute low- to mid-voltage DC power to various loads, including lighting, sensors, door locks, plug-in devices, actuators, controls, and more. The advantages of DC power systems become clear when considering the integration of renewable energy generation and energy storage systems.
This Navigant Research report considers the likely trajectory of markets for DC power technologies in commercial buildings as existing technologies mature and penetrate new regional markets. The study accounts for new technologies completing development cycles and moving into commercialization. Global market forecasts for revenue segmented by technology type and region extend through 2028.
