Market Research Methodology Market analysis and technology forecasting are complex tasks. Any predictions of the shape and trends of technology and economic movement start from the notion that the germ of what will be important tomorrow is present, although smaller or larger or in a different form, in our environment today. However, taking as a basis for a prediction the assumptions of current, conventional belief create a set of preconceived notions that can lead to serious mistakes. ElectroniCast, instead, looks to the basic driving forces. The future market for a particular type of flashlight consumed in general purpose (household), as well as commercial/industrial and harsh environment, military/ aerospace, emergency services and law enforcement applications depend on a number of factors, including: User equipment demand, back-up lighting due to power failures, various work-related tasks and recreational purposes, as well in conjunction with explosion and dangerous environments and various other circumstances. Information Base - This study is based on analysis of information obtained continually over the past several years, but updated through the end of June 2021. During this period, ElectroniCast analysts gathered information from authoritative and representative individuals in the flashlight manufactures and brand distributors, as well as LED manufacturing (materials, chips, packaging, devices, associated parts/pieces, fittings/fixtures, NVIS filters), other light sources and military/aerospace, law enforcement and other first responders, communication, automotive, medical services, R&D, and government regulating authorities, as well as power sources (batteries and capacitors). The interviews were conducted principally with:
The interviews covered issues of technology, R&D support, pricing, contract size, reliability, documentation, installation/maintenance crafts, standards, supplier competition and other topics. A full review of published information was also performed to supplement information obtained through interviews. The following sources were reviewed:
In analyzing and forecasting the complexities of the American market for flashlights, it is essential that the market research team have a good and a deep understanding of the technology and of the industry. ElectroniCast members who participated in this report were qualified. Bottom-up Methodology ElectroniCast forecasts are developed initially at the lowest detail level, and then summed to successively higher levels. The background market research focuses on the amount of each type of product used in each application in the base year (last year: 2020), and the prices paid at the first transaction from the manufacturer. This forms the base year data. ElectroniCast analysts then forecast the growth rates in component quantity use in each application, along with price trends, based on competitive, economic and technology forecast trends, and apply these to derive long term forecasts at the lowest application levels. The usage growth rate forecasts depend heavily on analysis of overall end user trends toward equipment usage and economic payback. Coronavirus Adjustment July 2021 – The coronavirus pandemic remains a grave concern throughout the world. In some countries, all “non-essential” businesses are closed, employment is affected by quarantine of the public. Depending on political, economic, health and several other consideration factors, these restrictions could be extended several more months. Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. are now people who weren’t vaccinated, according to the Associated Press (June 2021). This is a staggering demonstration of how effective the vaccines have been — it’s also an indication that daily deaths, now under 300, could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the shots. New data suggests that fewer than 1% of U.S. deaths from COVID-19 in May were in people who were fully vaccinated. However, the vaccine remains scarce in much of the world, while the U.S. supply is so abundant that shots sit unused. All U.S. adults have been eligible to get the shots since April 19, 2021. Children 12 and older have been eligible for vaccination since the middle of May, 2021. Many Americans seem to be relaxing precautions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic and resume everyday activities, even as some worry that restrictions were hastily lifted. That’s according to a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Majorities of Americans who were regularly doing so before the pandemic is returning to bars or restaurants, traveling and attending live events. Just 21% are very or extremely worried about a COVID-19 infection in their inner circle, while 25% are highly concerned that lifted restrictions will lead to additional coronavirus infections in their community. Because of the impact on production, supply/demand, decreases in sales, slowdowns in marketing, shipment and implementation (and other) caused by the negative effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19), we estimated a slowdown in consumption in 2020; however, driven by the immediate need to expand bandwidth in multiple applications, we are forecasting an increasingly strong recovery. ElectroniCast’s methodology in determining the slowdown of the increase in consumption (use) of packaged LEDs in selected applications, begins with the volume (quantity) forecast before any considerations of the coronavirus impact. Then, we evaluated current manufacturing, inventory, distribution channels, shipping, logistics, sales/marketing channels, and other variables. Other considerations include: financial/economy in general, employment (staffing) of all levels, such as design, implementation, production, marketing/sales, management, OEM capability and product/service demand, distributors, sales agents, customers (at all levels), and many other concerns were considered. All of the volume (unit quantity) evaluations were followed by evaluation of average selling price assessment, based on all of the (same) volume methodology assessments.

NEWS RELEASE
USA – LED Flashlight Market Forecast The consumption of new LED flashlights reached an estimated 180 million units in 2018 Aptos, CA (USA)—March 13, 2019 -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market and technology forecast firm covering photonic and electronic devices, today announced the findings of their market research study of the use of LED-based flashlights in the United States. According to the study, the overall consumption value is forecast to decrease with rising volume (quantity) growth offset by overall declining average selling prices (ASPs). The volume of LED flashlights is forecast to increase 180 million units in 2018 to over 200 million in 2028. Market forecast data in the study refers to consumption for a particular calendar year; therefore, the data is not cumulative data. The market study segments the use of LED flashlights by end-user groups, including: Government use in Military/Law Enforcement/First Responders; other user groups in Government; Commercial/Industrial; and Consumer applications. Last year in 2018, the Commercial/Industrial application held a 42.6% market share in consumption value, followed by the household or Consumer application segment and then by the Military, Law Enforcement, First Responder sector, and finally the “Other” Government user group segment. The market study also tracks the primary sales channels, which include in-store and e-commerce sales in specialty-type stores, such as Do-it-Yourself (DYI/hardware), sporting-goods (camping, guns, hunting, scuba/dive, other), and other; and general/variety stores (general merchandise stores, supermarkets/grocery, other), which sell just about anything; and finally, direct-sales from the flashlight brand company to large corporate or government users, as well as consumers making purchases via the Internet or telemarketing. The value of LED flashlights sold to the retail-specialty sales channel segment reached $505.6 million in 2018, which is a decrease from the previous year, according to ElectroniCast Consultants.
